December 8, 2014
As we get older maintaining a regular fitness routine becomes more important than ever. Regular exercise can help maintain your independence, boost your energy and manage or prevent pain and injury. In some cases working out can even reverse some of the symptoms of aging. Working out is not only good for your body, it can also help maintain mental health, improve memory, and increase your confidence and happiness. While starting and maintaining a regular exercise routine can become a challenge as you get older, choosing light and easy workout regimens that are great for you will make the transition easy and fun. And be sure to consult you health care provider before starting any new workout routines.
- Simple Aerobics – There’s no need to train like an Olympic athlete just to stay in shape. Try starting with just 5 minutes of aerobic activity a few times a week, including brisk walks, swimming or light tennis. Gradually increase the time to completing 30 minutes of cardio exercise for most days. If you’re a more advanced athlete, you may want to incorporate running and hiking, but remember to consult your healthcare professional before starting anything intensive.
- Practice Yoga and Tai Chi – Rooted in ancient eastern practices, these exercises may initially seem strange, but they are incredibly easy to learn and very beneficial. Both yoga and tai chi can help reduce stress levels, anxiety and muscle tension, while improving your balance, strength, mood and energy. Many community and senior centers offer classes, and you can also find many guided practices online or on DVD.
- Strength Training – We’re not talking about entering any weightlifting competitions here, just some light and easy exercises to help you strengthen muscles, maintain bone integrity, and improve balance, coordination and mobility. There are lots of simple exercises that you can do from the comfort of your own room or in a park, that don’t require additional equipment, just everyday objects or your own body weight.
Finding light and easy workout regimens that are great for you will not only improve your physical health, but also improve your mental and emotional well-being. Find a routine that works for you and focus on sticking with it.
